The saying “fake it till you make it” might actually be more accurate than we first thought. When it comes to body language, the way you communicate with your body can actually help to influence your mood. So, sheepish body language makes us sheepish, and confident body language makes us confident.

Granted, a lot of body language is unconscious, so it can be difficult to know that you are doing things that are undermining your confidence. If this is the case, all you need to do is be more aware of your body language and you’ll be well on your way to success.

Stand up straight

One of the simplest ways to appear more confident is to correct your posture. If you work at a computer all day, you might slouch over your keyboard and it can take some work to correct this. Try some light yoga classes to lengthen your muscles and improve your flexibility. Try to keep your shoulders back and keep a light curve in your spine. It can take some time to get this right, but the results will be worth it.

Stop playing with your hair

Hair twiddlers might think it looks cute, but in reality, this is a confidence busting move. You will appear more nervous and guarded if you immediately reach for your hair when things get tense. Try to break this habit by making yourself more aware that you are doing it. Wear an elastic band on your wrist and twang it every time you notice yourself reaching for your hair. You’ll soon break the habit.

Stop biting your nails

There’s nothing that will make you look more terrified or uncomfortable than nibbling on your nails. It’s bad for your teeth, it’s bad for your manicure and it sounds horrible to people around you. This is habit that a lot of people struggle to break because it becomes an unconscious habit. Try wearing a bitter nail polish on your nails to help you break this habit.

Smile!

An uncomfortable smile will make you look exactly that: uncomfortable! If you don’t smile naturally, you may not look as confident as you could. Worse still, people might think you are fake or deceitful. Many people struggle to smile naturally because they are nervous about their teeth, but there are so many cosmetic dentistry options available to you.
